LLANTHONY PRIORY

Our afternoon event is being held in the grounds on the historic Llanthony Priory - or Llanthony Secunda Priory, to give the
"Ancient Monument" its correct name.

Llanthony Secunda Priory is described as "a hidden gem in the heart of an industrial landscape". It is the remains of a mediaeval priory of Augustinian Canons, founded in 1136 as a cell of the mother church, Llanthony Prima, at Llanthony in Monmouthshire. At the time the Welsh borders were in turmoil and the prior and canons required a refuge, but when peace returned successive priors remained in Gloucester and Llanthony Secunda flourished, eventually absorbing its impoverished Welsh parent in 1481.

The Priory has a fascinating history, and was even part of the Great Western Railway for more than 60 years!  It was listed as a Ancient Monument in 1949 and sold to the Gloucester City Council by British Railways in 1974.
